How Notar Became Notar

In 1980s Norway, real estate transactions were mainly handled by law firms, and a specialized real estate brokerage service barely existed. Two young lawyers saw an opportunity to change the market—to create an independent real estate agency where sellers and buyers received better service and more secure transactions.

When their ideas were not well received, they chose to go their own way. In 1987, they founded Notar, a real estate firm that put the customer at the center and revolutionized the way homes were sold. What started as a vision quickly became a success and marked the beginning of a new era in the real estate industry.

The First Steps as a Real Estate Agency

The first decision for the newly established company was to choose a name, and the choice was obvious. A real estate transaction is about creating balance, where both buyers and sellers should feel secure and satisfied. The name landed on Notar, inspired by the scales of justice. Just like a real estate agent, we should be an impartial, trustworthy, and guiding force throughout the transaction, always aiming to make both parties happy.

Notar quickly became a success in Norway, and in 1997, we entered the Swedish market. The first office was opened on Linnégatan in Stockholm, and the expansion progressed at a rapid pace. Just three years later, we had eight offices in the capital.

In 2009, the Swedish and Norwegian parts of the company separated, and Notar Sweden was formed. At the same time, we acquired the rights to the brand in Sweden and chose a new, forward-looking direction.

Today, we have around 200 employees across 40 offices, with real estate agents in Stockholm, Malmö, Lund, Gothenburg, Jönköping, Linköping, Västerås, Uppsala, Sundsvall. Beyond Sweden, we are also present in Spain, where we help customers buy and sell properties on both Costa Blanca and Costa del Sol.
